Picture this: you’re an incoming freshman at the University of Florida, sitting with the brand-new friend you just met at your “Florida Preview” orientation. How exciting!

A Preview Staffer steps onto the stage and begins sharing all the different ways you can get involved at UF, and before long, the list of clubs feels absolutely endless. I still remember the excitement I had as a Freshman when I learned about the multitude of clubs at UF. It seemed that there was truly a club perfectly suited for everyone! These communities provided opportunities to share and strengthen passions amongst peers. However, I didn’t realize how difficult it would be to comb through the long list of clubs and extracurriculars, and pick ones that truly mattered to me.

As pre-medical students with strenuous academic course loads, our “free time” is often limited. Because of this reality, I wanted to make sure the extracurriculars that I invested in were deeply fulfilling. As a current Junior at the University of Florida, I can now attest that it is so important to choose extracurriculars that truly matter to you! Although everyone has different interests and passions, I think that a fail-proof way to find an organization that suits you is by getting to know the community. I have found that the saying “the people make the place” definitely holds true within the organizations at UF.

Through joining organizations such as uAMWA, I have been able to surround myself with people that not only have shared interests, but also have shared values. The friends that I have made through this organization have been nothing but uplifting and supportive, and they truly keep me coming back to uAMWA every single day. I am so thankful for these friendships, and know that I was able to find them because I chose to be a part of an organization that mattered to me! As you continue through your college experience, I greatly encourage you to do the same
