Balancing Books and Burpees: 5 Tips on How to Stay Active as a Busy College Pre-Med Student

Embarking on the journey of becoming a pre-medical student is undeniably challenging, with countless hours dedicated to studying, volunteering, shadowing, and research. Amidst the academic hustle, it's easy to sideline fitness. However, maintaining an active lifestyle is crucial for academic success. In this post, I'll share tips, both from personal experience and fellow friends, on how to prioritize physical fitness as a busy pre-med student.



Integrate Exercise into Your Schedule:

Make exercise an integral part of your daily routine by adding it to your to-do list alongside academic assignments. Specify your workout plan, whether it's a High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) session or a 5k run. This approach enhances the likelihood of completing your workout by the end of the day. UF has a large variety of free group fitness classes you can register for as well!


Optimize Weekends for Workouts:

Acknowledge the business of the school week and leverage weekends for more intensive workouts. Transform exercising into a social activity by engaging in workouts with friends. Not only does this make fitness more enjoyable, but it also fosters social connections. 


Combine Work with Walking:

Multitask by incorporating cardio workouts during activities like watching online lectures or review videos. Use the gym to run or walk on a treadmill while staying mentally engaged. Consider utilizing standing treadmill desks, available at the medical library, for a convenient blend of physical activity and study.


Walk to Classes:

On days when a full workout seems implausible, opt for walking between classes instead of taking the bus. This simple choice adds a dose of exercise without breaking a sweat. Enhance the experience by listening to podcasts related to your studies or personal interests.


Broaden Your Definition of Productivity:

Shift the mindset that only conventional academic activities matter. Medical schools value a holistic approach. Engaging in activities like running races or other hobbies contributes to your overall profile. These experiences not only offer a mental break but also present unique opportunities for networking and personal growth.


These tips aim to help you strike a balance between academic commitments and physical fitness. Remember, maintaining a healthy lifestyle positively influences both your mental and physical well-being, ultimately contributing to your success as a pre-med student.
